II-V-I Pattern Exercises

These are the first installment in what will be an expanding library of II-V-I and blues exercises. There will be two sets, an Introductory Series designed teach specific concepts and an Artist Series based on solo transcriptions.  Each exercise is transposed to all 12 keys following a cycle of 4ths and is available in treble and bass clef. Different keyed instruments can play them together simply by starting at the appropriate place in the cycle.

"Dues Etudes"

Updated - 2004.  Trumpet/Bb instrument, intermediate to advanced. 41 pages, PDF.  Twenty  (four for each CD cut) "harmonically progressive" etudes playable with the first five selections of the "Payin' Dues" Aebersold play-along.  Section 1 etudes contain no chromatic tones or substitutions. The  emphasis is on melodic development and diatonic voice leading.  Section 2 maintains the "first choice scale" harmonic vocabulary  but adds chromatic approach tones and rotations. Section 3 adds altered scales (super locrian, half-whole diminished, locrian #2, etc.) and tritone subs using pentatonics. Section 4 puts it all together.
